These tracks are what make the Dragon Sherman a fairly robust RC vehicle. The quality of the molded parts is excellent and the fit with sprocket is perfect. The strength of Delrin is a 100% improvement over stock tracks. I highly recommend these if you plan to RC your Sherm. I made one modification to the assembly in that I used black RTV to seal the flat track link bottom to the link, to keep out water.

    So many screws …

I ordered the Delrin tracks with the grey teeth. There doesn’t appear to be very much difference on first inspection but when the tracks are all assembled, there is a pleasing contrast between the black pads and the greyish teeth. I haven’t decided on whether I want to attempt painting the tracks given its’ slippery surface though there are many links to techniques working with Delrin on the web.

The tracks go together very easily thanks to a couple of clever jigs which are marvels in their own right. The tooth jig prepares 10 teeth at a time and it’s necessary to completely clean out the jig with the bits of shavings since the tolerances are so tight. This is probably the most time consuming aspect but if it’s not done, the teeth will have a tendency to ‘pop’ out when being drilled. During this operation I took the opportunity to clean up the sprue connection on the teeth as well as some flash along the straight end of a large percentage of the teeth. Nothing major but enough to address.

Assembly with the chevron jig goes together very quickly. I didn’t find it necessary to clamp the jig as hand pressure was enough to hold it together and sped up assembly. It’s very easy to over tighten the screws resulting in a ‘plank’ instead of loosely attached teeth. Even with adjusting the torque on the drill I found it necessary to hand loosen the screws. After a couple hundred screws (still less than a 1/3 total!) you get a feel of how far you need to go.

Get your favorite music and settle in for a few hours of assembly.
